Ryder

1 Y/O male black lab mix diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia

The story of unwavering courage and an unyielding will to live.

Ryder was among a group of six puppies that arrived in January 2023. Some of them exhibited significant neurological issues, potentially stemming from exposure to a neurotoxin. Ryder's two sisters displayed no symptoms and found loving homes, however three of the littermates experienced severe effects and had to be euthanized. While Ryder also displayed signs of neurological effects, they were less severe. His eyes embodied resilience and there was a determination to live in every wag of his tail.

Ryder's symptoms include uncoordinated movement, balance issues, and an unsteady gait which sometimes leads to stumbling. After visiting a neurologist and undergoing an MRI in August, it was concluded that he has an underdeveloped cerebellum, also known as cerebellar hypoplasia. Cerebellar hypoplasia is a congenital neurological condition that affects the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance. Despite the challenges of the condition, the neurologist expects Ryder to lead a full and fulfilling life with proper care and support.

While there is no cure for cerebellar hypoplasia, the condition will not worsen over time and treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms by providing a supportive and safe environment, appropriate exercise and physical therapy (to improve muscle strength and coordination), managing diet and weight, and offering mental stimulation and socialization.

Generous donations have allowed us to fit Ryder with a "help me up" harness, attend physical therapy, and receive acupuncture. We are also in the process of getting Ryder fitted for a custom wheelchair to provide supportive mobility aid while strengthening muscles and taking some stress off his other limbs.

Ryder would love a home to call his own, and boy is he ready! He has learned to adapt and conquer the everyday hurdles with resilience and a wagging tail. Imagine how he would thrive in a home filled with love, encouragement, and support. The ideal home for Ryder would be full of compassion, patience, an understanding of his limitations, 24/7 monitoring and love, and a genuine commitment to providing the best possible care and quality of life for him.

Help us spread Ryder's story and find the perfect fit for this extraordinary boy. If you are interested in being Ryder's forever home, please fill out an adoption application.
